USJ Inducts 12 Charter Members Into National Honor Society

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Department of Athletics has announced the induction of 12 student-athletes as its charter members into Chi Alpha Sigma (XAΣ), the National College Athlete Honor Society, which recognizes student-athletes from accredited four-year NCAA, NAIA, or NCCAA institutions who excel in both the classroom and competition.

"We are excited to make the announcement of our first class into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society," stated USJ's Athletic Director Amanda Devitt. "Our gifted student-athletes continue to amaze me with their academic achievements, while simultaneously competing at high levels on the field, court, and in the pool. They have worked incredibly hard in the classroom and that hard work has delivered outstanding results. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and how our student-athletes and staff are committed to academic excellence."

Saint Joseph was accepted into the National College Athlete Honor Society as Connecticut's Delta Chapter, under the direction of Primary Advisor Wole Oke and Co-Advisor Megan Bosworth. The Blue Jays are one of eight chapters in Connecticut and become the third GNAC institution to join Chi Alpha Sigma, accompanying Johnson & Wales and Rivier. Chi Alpha Sigma is the only honor society for college student-athletes, recognizing both athletic and academic achievements.

In order to be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student-athlete must have achieved at least junior academic standing by their fifth semester, attended USJ for two or more semesters, achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale), and earned a varsity letter. About Chi Alpha Sigma

Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only nonprofit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition. Founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach, Nick Mourouzis, Chi Alpha Sigma continues to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.

The purpose of the organization is to encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges and universities. To recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners. To encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics. To recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university. To mentor and to provide leadership to other athletes. To gain career development skills and translate them into the workplace upon graduation.
